Nobody can tell you that a venue must be booked eleven months out — that depends on where you are marrying and how sought-after the date is. What does hold everywhere is what depends on what: you cannot send invitations before you have a date and a place, and you cannot finish a seating plan before the replies are in. That dependency chain is why this list compresses rather than dropping its first half.
Why a twelve-month checklist fails most couples
The average printable checklist is written for the longest engagement its author could imagine, because that version has room for everything. It is also the version almost nobody is living in. Open one five months out and the top third is already impossible — not because you are behind, but because the list was never about you. Rescaling is the honest fix: the same steps in the same order, spread across the runway that exists.
What it cannot know
It does not know how quickly your registry office issues a licence, whether your venue needs twelve months or six, or that your photographer is booked out next June. Those are local facts, and the first phone call will tell you more than any checklist. What this does is make sure the order never breaks, and that a short engagement gets a plan rather than an apology.

There is no single right answer, which is why this list rescales instead of insisting on twelve months. What determines the honest starting point is your venue and the popularity of your date — a Saturday in June books out far earlier than a Thursday in February.
