What photo app is completely free?

Short answer

For a single event or trip, you can stay completely free on several apps as long as you stay inside their tier. A shared Google Photos album is completely free if every contributor has a Google account and you have room under 15 GB. An iCloud Shared Album is completely free if everyone has an iPhone. A Gathmo QR album is completely free for up to 60 photos, videos, and voice messages from any number of people over 30 days, and nobody uploading needs an account. What none of them gives you for free is forever: the storage apps charge when the quota fills, and the event album keeps the free tier to 30 days. Decide by the number of people uploading, then by how long you need it kept.

Completely free for whom

Free for the person viewing is easy; every app manages that. Free for the person uploading is the real test, because that is where the account walls are. Google Photos and iCloud both ask the contributor to sign in to their platform. That costs nothing in money and a great deal in participation: the uncle without a Google password and the friend on Android in an iPhone group simply do not upload.

A QR album removes the wall entirely. The code opens a web page, the page takes the upload, and the uploader is never asked who they are unless the host turns on a name field. This is why a free QR album collects more from a room than a free cloud album, even when the cloud tier is larger.

The trade is retention. A cloud album lives as long as the account does; a free Gathmo album lives 30 days. For an evening, a weekend, or a trip, that is the right shape — collect, download, done.
