Gathmo vs a photo booth

Gathmo vs a photo booth

Gathmo is the better choice if you want everything your guests saw, not only what happened in front of one box: the free tier already takes 60 photos, videos or voice notes, and every paid plan collects from every phone in the room, all day and after it. A photo booth is the better choice if you want prints in people’s hands that night and an attraction with props and an attendant that pulls a queue. Both put something at the venue and both need someone to point at it; they are not the same purchase, and plenty of couples book both — a booth for three hours, a QR code for the other twelve.

Photo booth prices are third-party cost guides, not our own quotes: Bark's 2026 guide gives $400–$1,200 for a standard 3–4 hour wedding rental, and Pixilated's gives $700–$1,500. Read on 20 August 2026. Your local quote is the number that counts.

THE SHORT VERSION

The booth gives you a night; the QR code gives you the day

Photo booth

A hired photo booth is a physical attraction: a box, a backdrop, a prop crate and usually an attendant, for three or four hours. Third-party guides put a wedding rental at $400 to $1,500, with hourly rates from about $100 to $300 and a two-hour minimum. Guests get a printed strip in their hand before they walk away, and you get a digital gallery of what the booth itself took. It stops when the hire window ends, and it only ever sees what happened in front of it.

Gathmo

Gathmo is a QR code on the tables. Every guest's own camera becomes part of one album — the speeches from the back of the room, the car park at 1am, the pictures nobody queued for. It takes photos, videos and voice messages, moderates them on every paid plan, shows approved ones on a screen from Celebrate, and stays open for 90 days to a year depending on plan. It starts free, and there is no hire window to run out.

Wording is deliberate. “Not offered” means the thing does not do it — and on the prints row, that is us. Photo booth figures are third-party cost guides rather than one supplier's quote, because there is no single vendor to quote: hire prices vary by city, season and package, and the only number that decides anything is the one your local supplier gives you.

Where they win

Where a photo booth is ahead

Two things a booth does that Gathmo does not. If either matters to you, that is a real reason to book one.

Something printed, in the hand, that night

A strip of four photos that a guest can put in their pocket before they leave is not a file. It goes on a fridge. Standard packages print 50 to 100 copies and many are unlimited within the hire window. Gathmo gives you the originals as a download and nothing to hold — that is a real gap and no digital album closes it.

It is an event, not a sign

A booth with props and an attendant makes a queue, and the queue makes the photos happen. A QR code on a table does not do that by itself — someone has to notice it, and a nudge from the host or the MC is worth more than any wording on the sign. If your worry is that guests will not join in, a booth solves that by standing in the room being obvious.

The difference

Where the two differ

Everyone's camera, not one camera

Gathmo collects what the whole room already photographed: the speech from table nine, the kids under the table, the bit of the evening the booth never saw because it was pointed at a backdrop.

A booth sees what happens in front of it, and only while it is there. Everything else your guests shot that day stays on their phones, which is exactly where it usually dies.

The voices

Gathmo records voice messages in the browser and puts them in the same album as the photos — the toast nobody filmed, the message from someone who could not come.

A photo booth prints pictures. Some suppliers offer an audio guestbook as a separate hire, with its own price and its own handset; the booth on its own does not record anyone speaking.

The clock

A Gathmo album accepts uploads for as long as it is online — 90 days to a year — so the photos that surface a week later still land in the same place as the rest.

The booth leaves when the hire ends. Anything that happens after midnight, or that someone finds on their phone the next morning, has nowhere to go.

Photo booth prices here are third-party cost guides read on 20 August 2026 — Bark gives $400–$1,200 and Pixilated $700–$1,500 for a standard 3–4 hour wedding rental — not quotes we obtained. We sell software and do not rent booths, so treat these as a range to sanity-check your local supplier against, not as a price we are offering to beat. Two of the rows below go to the booth. FAQ

Questions people ask before switching

What is the difference between Gathmo and a photo booth?

A photo booth is a hired machine that takes photos in one spot for three or four hours and prints them on the night. Gathmo is a QR code that collects photos, videos and voice messages from every guest's own phone, all day and for months afterwards, for a one-time price. The booth gives you prints and a queue; the code gives you everything the room saw.

Is a photo booth or Gathmo cheaper?

Third-party cost guides put a standard 3–4 hour wedding photo booth at $400 to $1,500, read 20 August 2026. Gathmo's paid plans are one-time per event and appear in your currency in the pricing table on this page, with a free tier to try first. We do not rent booths, so treat their figures as a range to check your local quote against.

Can I have both a photo booth and Gathmo?

Yes, and it is a common combination. The booth covers three hours of posed pictures with props and prints; the QR code covers the rest of the day, the speeches, the late night and the guests who never joined the queue. They do not interfere: guests scan whatever is in front of them.

Does a photo booth record voice messages?

Not on its own. Some suppliers rent an audio guestbook separately, usually a handset with its own price. Gathmo records voice messages in the browser on every plan, including the free one, and keeps them in the same album as the photos.

How long do guests have to upload with each?

A booth works during its hire window — three or four hours is standard, two hours is the usual minimum — and then it is packed away. A Gathmo album accepts uploads for as long as it is online: 90 days on Essential, six months on Celebrate, one year on Grand.

Do guests need an app or a phone?

Gathmo needs a phone with a browser, and no app or account. A booth needs no phone at all, which genuinely suits guests who do not carry one — that is one of the few places where the older technology is the more accessible one.

Pricing

How the two price it

A photo booth is priced by time. Third-party guides put a standard 3–4 hour wedding rental at $400 to $1,500, with hourly rates from about $100 to $300 and a two-hour minimum; add-ons are separate — a prop box, a green screen, a guest book, extra hours. What you buy is a machine, an attendant and a window of time, and the price moves with your city and your season. Gathmo is priced by what the album can do, once per event, with no subscription: the free tier takes 60 items so you can test the guest path, and the paid plans appear in your own currency in the pricing table on this page. Every paid plan takes unlimited photos, videos and voice messages and moderates them; the plan decides storage, clip length, the screen at the venue, the live stream and how long the album stays online. The two are not substitutes on price alone — a booth for three hours plus a QR code for the whole day is a common answer.

Switching

Using both, or moving from one to the other

  1. Decide what the prints are worth to you

This is the honest first question. If a printed strip in every guest's pocket is the thing you actually want, a booth is the purchase and nothing here replaces it. If it is the pictures you want, read on.

  2. Start a free Gathmo event

Name, date, done — about two minutes, no card. The free tier takes 60 photos, videos or voice notes: enough to test the guest flow and hear a recorded message on your own phone before you decide.

  3. Print the code and put it where people are

Four sign templates with your own wording and a 300-dpi PDF. Tables, the bar, next to the booth if you have one — guests scan what is in front of them, and the two do not compete for the same moment.

  4. Ask someone to say it out loud, once

The booth has an attendant; the QR code has you. One line from whoever is holding the microphone — that the code on the tables takes photos and voice messages — does more than any sign. It is the single thing that most changes how much comes back.
