iCloud/AirDrop alternative: Gathmo comparison

Gathmo is the better choice if 1 browser link must collect event photos from iPhone and Android guests; iCloud / AirDrop is stronger as a free, lasting Apple library or for direct original-file transfers between nearby Apple devices. Apple Shared Albums hold 5,000 photos and videos. This is an honest comparison written by Gathmo, including the situations where Apple's tools are the better pick.

Updated 30 August 2026. Shared Album limits, AirDrop requirements and German iCloud+ prices were checked only against live Apple and Apple Support pages.

ANSWER FIRST

Use Apple for a lasting library or a few originals; use Gathmo to collect from the whole room

iCloud / AirDrop

Apple offers 2 different answers. A Shared Album is a free collaborative library for up to 100 subscribers and 5,000 photos or videos; it stays until the owner deletes it and does not count against iCloud storage. Contributors use Photos, iCloud for Windows or iCloud.com with an Apple Account. A public website lets anyone view, but Apple documents it as viewing rather than guest contribution. AirDrop sends files directly between a nearby iPhone, iPad or Mac and can include the original file, edits and metadata when All Photos Data is selected. It is excellent for a few people in the same place, not a central event album.

Gathmo

Gathmo gives every guest the same QR-to-browser path on iPhone or Android, without a Gathmo account or guest app. Hosts can manage the event on the web or in the optional Android app. One event accepts photos, video and recorded voice, can approve contributions before a paid live wall, and exports the stored event copies together. The free tier takes 20 items for 30 days. German reference prices are €29 once for 90 days, €69 for 183 days and a live wall, or €89 for 365 days, live broadcast and transcripts. Browser photos are stored at up to 2,560 px with metadata removed, so AirDrop wins when full camera originals are the priority.

Where they win

When iCloud Shared Albums or AirDrop are the better pick

Apple's tools are not failed event platforms. They solve 2 narrower jobs extremely well, and this comparison should send the right reader to them.

A free Shared Album can stay without an event deadline

If the contributors already use Apple Accounts and you want a family library rather than an event workflow, a Shared Album costs no extra, holds 5,000 photos or videos, supports 100 subscribers and remains until the owner deletes it. Gathmo deliberately expires after 30 to 365 days.

AirDrop can move a full original directly

For 2 or 3 nearby Apple users, AirDrop is faster than setting up any album and can send the original file with edits and metadata when All Photos Data is selected. Gathmo browser photos are stored at up to 2,560 px with metadata removed, so it should not replace that original-file handoff.

Why people choose Gathmo

4 concrete differences for a mixed event

One browser path across the room

Gathmo asks every guest to scan the same QR code and upload in the browser on iPhone or Android, without a Gathmo login.

Apple does not offer a single account-free browser upload path across iPhone and Android: Shared Album contribution uses an Apple Account, while AirDrop requires Apple devices nearby.

Photo, video and voice together

Gathmo collects all 3 contribution types on the same event page and keeps them in the same host view.

Shared Albums and AirDrop handle photos and video. Apple's reviewed documentation does not describe recording a guest voice message into that album.

An event screen with approval

Celebrate and Grand can show approved contributions on a live wall while the event is running.

A Shared Album can be opened on a screen and owners can delete posts, but Apple documents no event mode that queues contributions for approval before display.

One archive instead of many transfers

Paid Gathmo plans export the stored event copies together, so the host closes the collection with 1 ZIP.

A Shared Album is already central, but its files are reduced copies; AirDrop preserves originals but leaves the host coordinating separate transfers.

Gathmo publishes this comparison and is the product being recommended in parts of it. Apple claims were checked on 30 August 2026 only against official Apple sources. We distinguish Shared Albums from AirDrop, state that Apple wins on free long-term libraries and direct originals, and do not claim hands-on Apple testing. FAQ

Questions people ask before switching

Are iCloud Shared Albums free?

Yes. Apple says Shared Album photos and videos do not count against iCloud storage, and the feature has no separate price. The album can hold 5,000 photos or videos and up to 100 subscribers. iCloud storage itself starts with 5 GB free, but that is a different meter.

Is AirDrop free?

Yes. AirDrop is included on supported Apple devices. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Apple says they should start within 10 m. It transfers directly to an iPhone, iPad or Mac rather than building a shared event album.

Can Android guests add to an iCloud Shared Album?

Apple documents Shared Albums in Photos, iCloud for Windows and iCloud.com after signing in with an Apple Account. Its public website option lets anyone with a current browser view the album, but Apple describes that path as viewing, not contributing. Test the exact Android path before inviting guests; Gathmo's guest upload needs neither an Apple Account nor an app.

How many photos fit in an iCloud Shared Album?

Apple publishes a limit of 5,000 photos and videos from all contributors in 1 Shared Album, plus 100 subscribers. Individual contributors are also rate-limited. AirDrop has no album limit because each transfer is separate.

Does an iCloud Shared Album keep original quality?

No. Apple says Shared Album photos are reduced to 2,048 px on the long edge and videos are sent at up to 720p for up to 15 minutes. AirDrop is different: with All Photos Data selected it can send the original file, edits and metadata.

Which is better for a wedding: iCloud, AirDrop or Gathmo?

Use a Shared Album for an Apple-heavy group that wants a free lasting library, and AirDrop for a few nearby original-file transfers. Use Gathmo when iPhone and Android guests need 1 browser QR flow, photo/video/voice collection, approval and an optional live wall.

Do Gathmo guests need an app?

No. Guests scan and upload in the browser without a Gathmo account. Hosts can use the web dashboard or optionally install the Gathmo Android app; the app does not change the guest flow or the free 20-item allowance.

Can I use Gathmo and iCloud together?

Yes. Use Gathmo for event-day collection across devices, then keep selected camera originals in iCloud Photos or another archive. A Shared Album is useful for Apple-family viewing, while AirDrop remains useful for handing over a few originals.

The extra

Pricing

How the two price an event in Germany

Shared Albums and AirDrop carry no separate charge. Shared Album items do not count against iCloud storage. Apple's German iCloud page lists 5 GB free, then iCloud+ at €0.99/month for 50 GB, €2.99 for 200 GB, €9.99 for 2 TB, €29.99 for 6 TB and €59.99 for 12 TB. Those subscriptions cover the wider iCloud account, not a paid event album. Gathmo charges once per event: €0 for 20 items and 30 days, then German reference prices of €29 for Essential with 50 GB and 90 days, €69 for Celebrate with 100 GB, 183 days and live wall, or €89 for Grand with 250 GB, 365 days, live broadcast and transcripts. Switching

Moving an event from iCloud or AirDrop to Gathmo

  1. Keep Apple where it already fits

Do not replace a working family Shared Album or original-file AirDrop handoff just to use another product. Decide whether the missing job is mixed-device event collection.

  2. Secure originals before moving copies

A Shared Album contains reduced copies. Preserve camera originals in the owner's library or transfer them with All Photos Data before treating any export as the archive.

  3. Test a free Gathmo event

Upload 1 photo, 1 video and 1 voice message from a second phone. Guests stay in the browser; the host may optionally use the Android app. No card is required for 20 items.

  4. Share the QR code and keep the Apple archive

Gathmo does not import a whole iCloud Shared Album automatically. Upload selected files through the device picker, then keep your Apple library or originals as a separate long-term archive.
